The tone of the meetings was described as constructive, with both leaders recalling "the deep historical bonds of friendship" between Kenya and Somalia.

Kenya's Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Somalia Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre have highlighted the strengthening of bilateral relations during Somalia PM's official three-day visit prompted by an invitation from the Kenyan government.

According to a joint communique released following high-level talks on Tuesday, the discussions, held on May 7, 2024, centred on a variety of bilateral, regional, and international topics of mutual interest. The tone of the meetings was described as friendly and constructive, with both leaders recalling "the deep historical bonds of friendship" between Kenya and Somalia.

"The discussions were held in a friendly atmosphere, reaffirming the historical ties that our nations share," DP Gachagua said. "We are pleased to continue building on our longstanding relationship, addressing mutual challenges and opportunities with respect and solidarity."

Accompanied by high-ranking officials from both nations, including cabinet secretaries and ministers, the leaders deliberated on issues crucial to both countries. The visit coincided with the 3rd session of the Kenya-Somalia Joint Commission for Cooperation (JCC), enhancing the framework for ongoing collaboration.

Prime Minister Hamza expressed his condolences to Kenyan families following the devastating floods, affirming Somalia's support.

"Our hearts and support are with the people of Kenya during this trying time. This solidarity reflects the spirit of our discussions and our shared commitment to assisting each other in times of need," he said.

Both leaders hailed the progress in their bilateral relations, particularly noting the significance of Somalia's recent inclusion in the East African Community.

"This marks a new chapter in our regional integration efforts, providing a robust platform for enhanced trade and cooperation," the PM said.

The communique highlighted agreements on several key areas, including trade, security, education, and infrastructure. Special emphasis was placed on the blue economy, with both states agreeing to foster and enhance the trade of fish and fishery products.

On security, the leaders committed to intensified cooperation against terrorism and other transnational crimes, acknowledging the importance of security for regional stability and development.

"We have directed our respective security agencies to strengthen cooperation in border security and capacity building for our police forces," the DP added.

Several Memorandums of Understanding were signed during the visit, covering political consultations, education, research and training, and transport and logistics, which are expected to cement further and facilitate the practical implementation of joint initiatives.

As the visit concluded, Prime Minister Hamza extended his gratitude for the hospitality provided.

"I express my profound gratitude to DP Gachagua, the government, and the people of Kenya for their warm reception and the constructive dialogue that has significantly contributed to our mutual understanding and cooperation," he said.

The leaders expressed their anticipation for the impactful implementation of the agreements forged during this visit, confident that these efforts will enhance the lives of their citizens and strengthen the bonds between Kenya and Somalia.
